Light is Everything!

Newborn Photography

X-Pro2 50mm Window Light

So my newborn is like 5 months old. Where did that go?!! And, because she is the 4th child, I basically have no photos of her. LOL. The first kid always has 50 billion photos and the subsequent kids grow up to think that nobody loves them! ๐Ÿคฃ But rest assured baby number 4, we do love thee!

I grabbed the Fuji X-Pro2 and the trusty 50mm f/2 lens and took some candids in the window light. ย All of these photos are completely unedited, other than the resize for the blog. Fuji absolutely nails skin tones. Every. Single. Time.

I shot all of these images in JPEG and used the various film simulation modes. The warmer ones were Astia and the cooler ones are Classic Chrome. I think the warmth of Astia is a little bit nice for a baby especially one as doughy as my Esther. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I was having some weird focusing issues with the 50mm earlier in the year. It seemed to back focus quite a bit/randomly. I was happy to see that this shoot seemed to nail focus pretty good, yielding some super sharp results at 100% crop. The Fuji face/eye detect setting works surprisingly well and is no gimmick. I’ll be using that setup forever when shooting this lens wide open.

The other thing I love to death about the film simulation modes is ACROS. This yields such glorious black and white images it’s scary. To think that you can get this kind of look in camera with no extra editing? It’s just awesome. I’ve always been a huge fan of ACROS and the really nice “filmic” type grain it has. I setup my Q menu settings with NR -2, Across with a Yellow filter (makes skin glow a bit), Highlight & Shadow Tone -1 and Sharp +1. It seems to yield pretty nice results.

For another look at the various filter effects with ACROS, look at this page.ย It has some really good side by side comparison. The green filter would be better for character portraits to flatten out the skin a bit. But for doughy babies, yellow is where it’s at! ๐Ÿ˜Ž ย

Double the Fun

20131216-FTwins-001

For the last post of 2013, I will go out with double the fun! Leighton is having a blast being big sister to Laya and Levi. We had a fun little shoot with the twins and they cooperated swimmingly well. ย I’m always taken aback by how well the little newborns tolerate photo shoots and photographers! ๐Ÿ™‚ So here’s to 2013! May 2014 double the fun yet again! . . . Photographically speaking of course! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The Jade Monkey

20130319BLG-7

From engagement to wedding to maternity to newborn, I’ve had the blessing of taking all of Lucas and Kayla’s life event photos. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s been a blast! And, this last shoot was just as exciting as the others have been. It’s a truly amazing moment to see all of life come together in the next generation. ๐Ÿ˜Ž This was my first shoot managed and edited with Lightroom too. Still getting to know the software environment so I was noticeably slower than I was with Aperture. However, the speed at which Lightroom can edit and deal with D800 RAW files with amazing, blows Aperture 3 out of the water. One thing that was better in Aperture was the healing/clone brush. Lightroom’s spot retouch works better, but Apertures brush was nicer than having to do everything with little circles. I also miss Aperture’s file handling. It was so much easier to backup everything into vaults. But, the trade off is well worth it. I’m really enjoying Lightroom and glad I made the switch.

Here’s some highlights from the shoot. But first, a video of Mr. Burns talking about the Jade Monkey. (I couldn’t resist.) ๐Ÿ˜‰

Playing with Light

It’s been a busy little while these past days, mainly spent shovelling snow and fighting off depression from this never ending winter. It’s truly like in the Chronicles of Narnia where it’s always winter and never Christmas. Except that we know Christmas has already passed. MONTHS ago. And we are still stuck in the mad grips of winter. Oodles of snow, cold temperatures. I’m on the edge! ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I will prevail. Lots of fruit and green veggies. Lots of photos…

Speaking of which, I’ve got a combo blog post here from a couple of recent shoots. I’ve really struggled lately with just posting clients’ photos for the sake of posting. I’ll leave that up to them to decide how much they want to share with family and friends. I’m going to concentrate more on the techniques used for the shots and a bit about why these images have been made the way they are (click on the images below for the info). I find that aspect lacking in many blog posts from famous photogs. There is an amazing one by the legendary Greg Heisler where he photographed Yasser Arafat for Time. He lit it all with a simple soft box and black velvet ย background. But why? I watched the video wondering why he chose to light the image that way. [Speculation about being shot??? Gotta be fast! ;)]

Cozi

I was blessed to take some pictures of a very special little girl the other day. Cozi has a bittersweet baby story. There were two but her twin had severe health complications and didn’t survive. The emotions that accompany both having and losing a baby at the same time are nearly impossible to put into words. We look for answers to the big question “why?” – but there aren’t any. We know that our world is a place marred by death and iniquity, of which none of us is immune. At times of tragedy, the Christian Faith encourages us that our loving and gracious God sees things we don’t, works in ways we don’t understand, and by the gift of His cross and resurrection, has conquered death by death. We trust that the anger and sadness we now feel at the loss of a child will be turned into rejoicing and reunion in eternity.

When I was asked to take photos, instantly a photo came to mind. We wanted to be real to the situation to rejoice and celebrate but also mourn and be sad at the same time. This mirror image photo of Cozi wraps it all up as she and ‘Bella Vita’ are forever together in the photo.

+ Soli Deo Gloria! +

Ruby!

Been swamped lately with all manner of this that and the other thing. Not the least of which was meeting my newest niece yesterday in Grenfell. Ruby Ann was welcomed was welcomed with open arms by her whole family. We got some cool photos from the shoot but I’m keeping them in the vault for my in laws.ย Pria has 6 week up on her but you’d never tell. Check out the SxS photo on the blanket! Ruby out weighed her by a bunch so she’ll have to eat her wheaties! heheehehh… ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž

But Pria’s been taking lessons from Ethan so she’s more than unto the challenge! heheheheeh…

Pria Bravo!

FlowerPot’s Baby Story

Ok! At long last, here is flowerpot’s baby story. I put some video clips together and incorporated some still images too. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I LOVE the thumbnail that YouTube chose for the video. Bwawhahhahaa… Regan’s face = “Whatchoo talkin’ bout Willis?!” ๐Ÿ˜€

Also, here are some of her baby photos I’ve been working on but I still have some more that I want to take but haven’t had the chance just yet.

Keep reading for my rant on newborn photography or just stop here and enjoy the media! ๐Ÿ˜‰ (more…)

Babies

Everyone likes babies (at least in theory and not at 2AM). ๐Ÿ˜‰ Here’s some shots from a recent newborn & family shoot I did. The next generation of leaders and workers who will pay my old age pension! Can’t beat that! ๐Ÿ˜Ž ย My advice to the world is to have lots and lots of babies! Young people population shortage is a major problem. Plus, they’re cute! ๐Ÿ˜†

Alexys B

Moir Dr. welcomed our newest resident just recently! All the little princesses on the crescent were glad to welcome one more precious little girl in Alexys. Ethan doesn’t know what to think as the pink army seems to keep getting bigger and bigger. He may have to seek friendship elsewhere. He’s starting to think wearing a tutu is a great thing! Thankfully Uncle bought him a metric tonne of tonka trucks for Christmas. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I digress. It was a riot to take some photos for Jenn & Brock of their newest addition and a few of big sister Kennedy too. I love how newborns can sleep through anything and Alexys was a great model for us, putting up with pretty much any pose! Can’t beat that! ๐Ÿ˜Ž
