The girls had their splurge party on Moir Dr. Monday night. BBQ & Movie in the backyard was the name of the game. But after the sun went down the real fun started. Jimmy brought the kids over some glow sticks and soon enough I setup a flash on a stick! 🙂 This is why point and shoots just don’t cut it and DSLR cameras rock the set. The fancy term for this is “dragging the shutter” – meaning you use really slow shutter speeds to capture motion in the photo, but then use flash to keep some of it sharp. It makes for a really cool photo that I never ever grow tired of. The kids too find it awesome to see the colors from the glow sticks caught on camera. Super fun! 😎
Wow! What a crazy night. At about 11PM I decided it would be cool to venture out into the intense fog that had saturated the valley. Grabbed my camera, cable release and tripod and away I went. It was thick, barely could see past the car hood. I knew there would be some sweet sassy photos down by the river as the folks in beaver park had some yard lights that could work to back light some trees and then use the moon light as ambient fill. It was long exposures 30″ or more at tiny f/22 apertures. And while those 30 seconds tick by, all you hear is leaves crackling around you. What’s out there in the foggy darkness?!!?! 😯 Turns out it was deer. Whitetails were surrounding me all round which was very spooky! I finally scared them away and went back to the car. It was so calm too. Geese flying over head sounded like a roaring crowd of 30,000 people. Then a great horned owl flew overhead of me while I was doing the bridge exposure. I could have had a silhouette shot of the owl in front of the moon if I had another camera with me! That would have been cool. 8) Oh well, I was mid a 3 minute exposure so I didn’t want to goof it up. And I’m glad I didn’t.
More photo geek tips: When shooting at night, lock your white balance into tungsten. It makes everything have a really cool blue look, especially when you have fog. White fog is rather boring, but blue or pink looks ethereal. 🙂
We struck another summer bucket list item off the roster tonight: watch a movie outside! So, we hooked up a projector, shined the image onto a bed sheet tethered to the swing set and away we went! It worked out really well and everyone loved it. Nice weather too, which is nice, not having water flowing into all of my electronics… 8) Rio is a pretty fun little movie too! Makes me want to travel to Brazil! 🙂
Everyone loves the moon! So here it is! 😆
I heard a really cool trick to know weather the moon is waxing or waning (getting fuller or going away). It’s DOC. If the moon is full on the right side, like the letter D, then it is waxing and getting fuller. Full moon is the O (no duh) and if the moon is full on the left side it is waning, like the letter C. So the next time you see the moon in it’s various lunar phases, just remember DOC and you’ll know what’s happening with our little pal the moon. And, you’ll be able to impress all your friends with your way cool knowledge of moon phases. 8)
